Poem: The Greatest Among Us
THE GREATEST AMONG US
Born of humble circumstance
to parents who were unknown,
the child learned to take a stance
as he continued to grow.
He was a man of sorrows,
and was acquainted with grief.
Angry crowds teased and followed
him for having strange beliefs.
They didn’t like his long hair
or that he wore common clothes.
These crosses he had to bear
while others swore profane oaths.
Though accused of blasphemy,
he never sought to destroy.
He focused on you and me
and how to bring people joy.
So he changed the words to songs,
and learned the accordion.
He showed nerds where they belong
as he toured in every region.
He saw crowds through glasses thick
and made his jokes musical.
His name was Al Yankovic,
but you can call him Weird Al.
